Off-grid power calculators that show their math

Free tools to size solar panels, batteries, cables and fuses for vans, RVs, cabins and camping. Every result comes with the formula, worked examples and the assumptions behind it.

Planning an off-grid system? Start here

  1. Work out your daily energy. List your appliances in the van and RV solar and battery calculator. It adds up the watt-hours you use each day.
  2. Size the battery bank. The same calculator gives a capacity. Then test it with the battery runtime calculator, especially if you are choosing between lithium and lead-acid.
  3. Size the solar array. The result depends on how many peak sun hours you get where you travel.
  4. Choose cables and fuses. Use the wire gauge and fuse calculator for each circuit, starting with the battery and inverter.
  5. Buying a portable unit instead? The power station runtime calculator shows how long it will run what you plug in.

The rules behind the calculators

These are the main formulas we use. Each calculator page explains its own version in full, with worked examples.

QuestionRule usedWhere
How much energy is stored?Wh = Ah × voltsBattery runtime
How much battery do I need?Daily Wh × days without sun ÷ usable share (90% lithium, 50% lead-acid)Van solar and battery
How much solar do I need?Daily Wh ÷ (peak sun hours × 0.75)Van solar and battery
What does an inverter cost me in energy?AC loads ÷ 0.85Power station runtime
How thick must the cable be?mm² = 2 × 0.0175 × length (m) × amps ÷ allowed volt dropWire gauge and fuse
What fuse should I use?About 125% of the load current, never above the cable’s ratingWire gauge and fuse
